Trot Lovers is a
simple yet full of drama clichés. The drama is about a fallen pop star that is
forced to manage an unknown girl whose song of choice is Trot. Insert your
second male lead who is the boss of the music company and an annoying bitch
second lead female and you’ve completed the drama which is Trot Lovers. I wasn’t expecting amazing writing from the drama. My
expectation was way low. My interest in this drama due to the cuteness of the
cast.
Ji Hyun Woo and Jung Eun Ji as Joon Hyun and Choon Hee
are adorable as the OTP. They had
tremendous chemistry and both played well together. I truly loved the ride of
observing these character sets off as enemies, to friends, and finally to
lovers. The couple’s loveable cuteness helped overlook the horrid writing. I don’t think anyone but Eun Ji could play Choon Hee. She has a
powerful voice to pull off trot. I wished more trot music would’ve been sung. I
could listen to Eun Ji sing the phone
book with her voice.
Shin Sung Rok did
an awesome job playing the rival for Choon Hee’s heart. Geun Woo is far
different from his You Who Came
from The Stars character. I found the CEO quirky with tons of charm. He may
even come across as creepy, only in such a loving manner. The writer clearly had
no idea how to use his character in the story once he was no longer a rival for
Choon Hee. However, Sung Rock was
able to keep his charisma, no matter the screen time he was given.
I
would’ve been super happy to not have Park Soo In as a character. As the
antagonist, she is out to destroy all in her path. There was no reason the
drama had to go down the bitchy second female lead. Anytime her character was on screen, I
could’ve cared less. She didn’t bring anything new and the fact the drama gave
her redeeming qualities seem pointless. She just wasn’t a likeable character.
If
you’re looking for some mindless fun with upbeat music, give Trot Lovers a chance. It isn’t the best
drama of 2014, but it wasn’t the worst. The play is full of tropes right and
left, which make watching the drama a tad irritating. However, the music, the
couple, and the supporting characters are the heart of the drama. Until next time, watch more dramas.
